Duran Duran to Auction Collection of Vinyl Oddities

Duran Duran announce in BBC news this morning that they have been touring with a pack of over 100 vinyl oddities and a turntable backstage. There is an ongoing contest to see who can turn up the weirdest album. At the end of the tour, they will be auctioning off he vinyl lot for a good cause..

The Charleston Post ran a story this morning on the drive by truckers’ stop through Charleston. As everyone knows, their albums are released (or at least re-released) on vinyl. The Latest album is, according to the band, made to be on vinyl.

Formulaic Pop

The Broward Palm Beach New Times ran an article this morning about the science of pop. Notably, they discussed the formulaic generation of pop music. Even more interesting was a quote from Steve Albini on All Wave Recording, where from instrument to vinyl, no digital is inserted into the signal chain. Very interesting.

Vinyl comeback drives turntable sales

The Boston Herald had a great article this morning outlining how the comeback of vinyl is opening new markets for turntable designers and manufacturers. Very interesting, but i STILL prefer my vintage turntables. 

One of the questions it raises is… once i get vinyl, how do i get it on my ipod? Well, I will leave that as an exercise for the class. Suffice it to say that while they may be shady, there are millions of ways to do it.

Of note, most all current vinyl releases include access to hifi audio rips. A much better option than doing it yourself.

Coldplay Announces Tour And Free Vinyl Single

Coldplay has announced a free show at madison square gardens for their new album ‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends’.. but even better yet.. they are giving out a free 7″ vinyl pressing of their new single “Violet Hill” inside the current issue of NME.

Ebay’s Top 5 Vinyl Record Sales

CDDiscoveries posted Ebay’s top 5 vinyl record sales.

It sort of made me feel like a cheapskate. Normally, I won’t spend over $10 on an album, but these guys went a little overboard. A Springsteen 45 went for $3k. WOW!

New Book on the art of Storm Thorgerson

BlogCrititics announces a new book on album art buy Storm Throgerson. Most of the younger folks won’t recognize the name, as they have been sorely gipped out of vinyl LP sized album covers and inserts, but i hear the kiddies are coming on board with vinyl now, too.

Rhino Releases Doors Box Set

Undercover has a story on the new doors boxed set with some peeks as to what is under the hood. 

Although i have them all on vinyl, i would probably spend the $180 or so go buy this thing. unfortunately, I am broke.

Mystery Train Records - Gloucester, MA

The arts section of The Guardian today has a blurb on by michael Hann today on a recent discovery of a record shop in an unlikely seaside  town.

I WISH I had that kind of luck. Stumbling my way into a vinyl shop. Seems like everytime i find a vinyl shop in a strange town, it’s closed.
